Founding Director, PILOT Gallery, Istanbul
PILOT gallery in Istanbul occupies a converted 1970s nightclub, its vast and varied spaces lending a distinctive character to the gallery’s interdisciplinary programme. It was founded in 2011 by Azra Tüzünoğlu – who had previously set up a gallery called Outlet – with the twin aims of supporting emerging Turkish and international artists and celebrating the history of contemporary art in Turkey; artists on the roster include Halil Altındere and Fikret Atay. Before becoming a gallerist, Tüzünoğlu worked as an art critic for several years, experience that perhaps underpins the robust public-facing programme at PILOT: in 2013 it launched Co-PILOT, a neighbouring education and research space dedicated to talks, screenings, performances and workshops.
