This display at the Clark Art Institute is the first museum survey of ‘Les Lalanne’ since Claude Lalanne died – 11 years after her husband – in 2019. Though they often exhibited together, the couple rarely collaborated; while each drew on close observation of the natural world to create fantastical sculptures, Claude would veer to the surreal, with works such as her famous Choupattes (cabbages raised on chickens’ feet), and François-Xavier to the more utilitarian, as with his large copper desks in the form of a rhinoceros.
