18 June seems to be International David Lynch Day. In London, the New River Café in Stoke Newington is turning itself into a Twin Peaks Diner Experience, inspired by the TV series’ Double R Diner (and to mark MUBI’s streaming of Twin Peaks from 13 June); in Prague, an exhibition of the director’s art opens at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art; and in Los Angeles, Julien’s Auctions, in association with Turner Classic Movies, is selling off some 450 items from Lynch’s personal archive.
It’s not entirely clear why these events are all taking place on 18 June, although Rakewell notes that the date will mark the 15th anniversary of one of the master’s greatest tweets: ‘This weekend I’m going to try to find out if I’m connected to the moon.’ (After three days of research, he resurfaced: ‘I’m pretty sure I’m connected to the moon.’) In any case, lucky bidders are being offered a chance not only to go behind the red curtain, but also to buy the actual curtain – in this case, it’s identical to the one from the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks (1990–91), complete with black-and-white zigzag rug (currently at $2,500).
There’s more catnip for film fans: Lynch’s own 35mm print of his first feature, Eraserhead (1977); a custom-made five-neck guitar that he used on a number of recordings in the 2010s (‘It’s somewhat musical, but then again, it’s not,’ he once told Boss Users Group Magazine); and, most excitingly for Rakewell, all manner of coffee-related paraphernalia, including the espresso machine that Lynch used on a daily basis. The film-maker adored cigarettes, but his intake of coffee was every bit as prodigious – a passion shared by Twin Peaks’ Special Agent Dale Cooper.
‘I’m going to let you in on a little secret,’ Kyle MacLachlan’s Cooper tells the local sheriff in one episode. ‘Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it, don’t wait for it, just let it happen.’ This auction provides ardent Lynchians with the perfect excuse to follow Special Agent Cooper’s advice.
