Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Museum Folkwang in Essen, this exhibition (20 August–8 January 2023) traces the museum’s historical ties to the Expressionist movement, from hosting the first solo exhibition of the German painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner to building one of the most impressive collections of Expressionist art in Europe. Highlights of the exhibition include Kirchner’s Doris with Ruff Collar (c. 1906) and Two Dancers (c. 1929). Many works originally acquired by the museum’s founder Karl Ernst Osthaus will return to Folkwang on loan, including significant works by Egon Schiele such as Self-Portrait with a Lowered Head, which was purchased by Osthaus in 1911.
