Fire blazes through Glasgow School of Art | A fire broke out at the Glasgow School of Art on Friday night, drawing a total of 120 firefighters and 20 fire engines to the scene. The building, which was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and had previously survived a fire in 2014, has been badly damaged and the entire interior seems to be lost. The extent of the structural damage is still unclear and there are fears that the building may have to be demolished.
Fatal shooting at arts festival in New Jersey | There has been a fatal shooting at Art All Night, an annual 24-hour arts festival held in Trenton, New Jersey. The festival was cancelled after a gang-related fight escalated, resulting in gunfire that left 22 injured and one suspect dead. The shooting began at about 3am on Sunday morning while approximately 1,000 attendees were present.
Joan Jonas wins Kyoto Prize | Japan’s Inamori Foundation has announced Joan Jonas, known for her video and performance art, as the winner of its 2018 Kyoto Prize for Art. The prize includes 100 million yen and a medal of 20-karat gold. Jonas will give a lecture when she receives the award in November and has been invited to participate in the Kyoto Prize Symposium in March 2019.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z release new music video made at the Louvre | On Saturday night Beyoncé and Jay-Z released a new music video for ‘Apeshit’, a track from their new collaborative album Everything is Love. The video was largely filmed at the Louvre in Paris and features several of the most famous works from the collection, including paintings by Leonardo, David, Géricault, and Veronese. The Great Sphinx of Tanis and the Winged Victory of Samothrace can also be seen.
