While museums around the world are shuttered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibition openings will be replaced by a selection of digital initiatives providing virtual access to art and culture.
The former residence of Henry Clay Frick (1849–1919) on Fifth Avenue, still home to his great collection of fine and decorative art, is one of the few Gilded Age mansions still standing in New York. No wonder the Frick Collection has chosen to show it off, with the first virtual tour of the museum launched back in 1998. Around eight years ago this was updated thanks to a collaboration with Google using Street View technology, allowing for 360-degree views of the building’s indoor and outdoor areas. Clicking on the works on view takes you to a detailed object page which includes segments from the museum’s audio guide, and there are also archival photographs showing the evolution of the spaces over the decades. Watch a video of the tour below and try it out yourself on the Frick’s website.
