This exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London (29 June–18 September), brings together works by Black artists who draw inspiration from folklore, spiritual traditions and science fiction. Curated by Ekow Eshun, the show explores how artists have made use of fantasy as a way of challenging and discussing socially constructed ideas of race. Among the works on display are an immersive installation by the British-Caribbean sculptor Hew Locke and a series of mixed-media works by Lina Iris Viktor, including Eleventh (2018) which makes reference to African textiles and astronomy. Additional highlights include a series of Nick Cave’s Soundsuits, among them a recent work that commemorates the murder of George Floyd. Find out more from the Southbank Centre’s website.
