Joey Holder creates multimedia installations that explore the relationship between humans and natural and technological forms. For Holder, ‘everything is a mutant and a hybrid’. Fittingly, then, her work takes place both off- and online, and moves between more traditional media, including photography and sculpture, and emerging technologies such as AI and CGI. Her latest work, Abyssal Seeker, is a digitally rendered film depicting a fictional journey into an unexplored deep-sea brine lake (‘a dark, safe place beyond data’); it had its premiere at Seventeen Gallery in London this spring with updated versions subsequently shown in Prague and Aberdeen. Holder also co-runs an artist-led gallery in Nottingham called Chaos Magic. Her work has been included in exhibitions and venues including the Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts (2021), the Design Museum in London (2018), FACT in Liverpool (2017) and Wysing Arts Centre (2015 and 2016); next year she will participate in the 23rd edition of the Biennale of Sydney.
