The Belvedere Museum, Vienna, presents 70 paintings and 40 drawings by the German-Austrian landscape painter Joseph Rebell, revealing the artist’s fondness for the mountainous scenery of southern Italy (15 June–13 November). Renowned for his ability to capture sunlight, Rebell’s depictions of the Gulf of Naples and the Capri islands famously impressed the Austrian Emperor Franz I who commissioned four landscapes of the Naples Region which are currently housed at the Belvedere. Rebell’s signature use of warm tones is demonstrated in works such as Sunset over the Campi Flegrei Looking Towards the Islands Prócide and Ischia (1819) and Coast of Capri at Sunset (1816), while darker landscapes depicted in works such as Sea Storm near the Arco di Miseno near Miliscola, Looking toward Nisida (1819) demonstrate the artist’s versatility. The exhibition also marks the return of the artist to the museum where he acted as director of the Imperial Painting Gallery in the Upper Belvedere between 1824 until his sudden death in 1828.
