Our daily round-up of news from the art world
Kunsthalle Wien to be directed by curatorial collective | Kunsthalle Wien has announced that the Croatian curatorial collective What, How & for Whom (WHW) will take over leadership of the institution. Last May, the current director Nicolaus Schafhausen announced that he would resign from the post three years before the end of his contract, citing the ‘resurgence of nationalist politics’ in Austria as a reason for his departure at the end of this month. Directorship of the Kunsthalle will be taken up by three of the four founding members of WHW, which has been in charge of the Gallery Nova in Zagreb since 2003; it is the first time the Kunsthalle has been led by a collective.
Blain Southern to open New York gallery | British art dealers Harry Blain and Graham Southern are set to open a third gallery space in New York in May, adding to their existing premises in London and Berlin. The new space will be housed in what was formerly Cheim & Read’s premises in Chelsea, and will open during Frieze Week with an inaugural exhibition of work by Malian artist Abdoulaye Konaté.
ArtCenter/South Florida announces plans for new $30m home | The ArtCenter/South Florida has announced plans for a new $30m arts facility in the Little Haiti neighbourhood of Miami. The not-for-profit organisation, founded in 1984, will also be changing its name to Oolite Arts, a nod to the area’s geology. The new 40,000-square-foot space will feature 22 resident artist studios, a large exhibition space, and a 120-seat theatre; it has been funded by the sale of the center’s previous space on Miami’s South Beach for $88m in 2014.
Todd Williamson wins Pollock Prize for Creativity | The Pollock-Krasner Foundation has named California-based artist Todd Williamson as the winner of the 2019 Pollock Prize for Creativity. The prize comes with a $50,000 grant, which will support the painter’s solo exhibition at the church of Santa Maria della Pietà, part of the Venice Biennale in May.
