Independent art adviser and co-founder, Latitudes Art Fair, Johannesburg
Last September the art advisor and curator Lucy MacGarry co-founded Latitudes Art Fair, an annual fair in Sandton, Johannesburg, for contemporary art from Africa. The aim of this venture – along with the year-round digital platform Latitudes Online – is to provide sustainable support for the visual arts in Africa; accordingly, the fair takes a non-traditional approach to selecting its participants, and includes artists, independent curators and institutions as well as galleries.
Alongside the fair, MacGarry also runs a curatorial consultancy and art advisory service for corporate and private collectors, drawing on her extensive past experience across the commercial and non-profit sectors. In 2017, she curated the South African pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale, having spent the previous three years as curator of FNB Art Joburg, during which time MacGarry expanded the fair’s focus to include a section on the art scenes of East African countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Somalia and Sudan. Between 2009 and 2014, she was curator at Yellowwoods Art, where she managed the corporate collections of Nando’s Global, Spier Wine Estate and Hollard Insurance.
