The Swedish sculptor and installation artist is known for her use of unusual materials, such as electricity, shoelaces, water and mastic gum – and her artworks often have an unfinished, raw appearance. The upcoming exhibition (30 April–22 August) will focus on how the sculptor transforms or even breaks these materials and how, in turn, we should view the end results. At the Berlinische Galerie, Canell will construct a site-specific installation called Muscle Memory (2022), made of smashed molluscs shells and weighing 7 tonnes. Alongside this piece, the video project Energy Budget (2017), created with her long-term collaborator Robin Watkins, will also be shown.
