Liveried servants carrying food-laden platters
(c. 1770), Vicente Navarro
By the mid 18th century, Valencia was the tile capital of Spain and its most important factory belonged to Vicente Navarro, a craftsman who collaborated with artists of the Academia. A confident attribution to Navarro is based on the close similarities between this rococo tile painting and one Navarro produced for the kitchen of the Casa del Marqués de Benicarló, which also has fashionably dressed servants bearing trays of food, a basket and towel hanging behind them, and a cat and dog rustling for scraps.
