A Wedding Procession
(c. 1570s), Marten van Cleve I
Like his illustrious contemporary Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Marten van Cleve favoured scenes of peasant feasts and celebrations. As was customary, the bride and groom walk separately, each accompanied by a man playing a doedelzak, and this instrument – along with the church bells, windmill, birdsong, footsteps, and laughter – can be heard in the music the gallery commissioned from William Lyons to accompany this recently rediscovered monumental painting.
Selected by Susan Moore.
