A pair of Niō sculptures (Kongõrikishi)
Ritsuō (1663–1747)
Sydney L. Moss, Chinese and Japanese art specialist since 1910, takes its first bow at TEFAF this year. This signed pair of figures represent the two wrath-filled and muscular guardians of the Buddha. One open-mouthed, the other mouth closed, they symbolise the first and last syllables of the Sanskrit alphabet, Ah and Un, the birth and death of all creation. The versatile Ritsuō was an Edo sculptor, lacquer artist, painter, and poet.
