If every picture tells a story, a good photo exhibition can feel like a well-stocked library. The ability of photography to convey character, setting and narrative is especially evident at the annual exhibition that follows the Sony World Photography Awards. The show, which has been held in London for the last 15 years, brings together an impressive array of snapshots taken all over the world, providing glimpses of contemporary life (and sometimes death) across diverse cultures (17 April–5 May). Highlights this year include a painterly photograph of a coiling snake being held aloft by a dark hand against a turquoise sky; a striking profile view of the Hotel Marcel in New Haven, Connecticut, which Marcel Breuer designed for the Armstrong Rubber Company in 1970; and a photo of a chimp resting against a painted backdrop of a jungle – a reminder of the ravages of deforestation.
