The Art of the Potter: Ceramics and Sculpture from 1930s to Now

The Hepworth Wakefield considers how ceramic arts have evolved over the last century

Spade Vase (unknown dates), Hans Coper. Hepworth Wakefield Collection

Drawn from the Hepworth Wakefield’s impressive holdings of ceramic works, this exhibition (opening 20 January) traces the evolution of ceramic art from post-war British studio pottery through to works by contemporary artists. With more than 80 works, the exhibition considers the connections between ceramics and sculpture, shining a light on artists who have pushed the boundaries of their medium. Among the highlights are works by Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, including Rie’s Vase with flared rim, as well as a series of colourful works made during the 70s and ’80s by artists such as Carol McNicoll. The exhibition also includes an Asymmetric Vessel (2021) by Magdalene Odundo, which entered the Hepworth’s collections in June 2022. Find out more on the Hepworth Wakefield’s website.
