This week’s Apollo Art Diary highlights museums and expansions that are scheduled to open later this year.
After three years and £9.5m refurbishment, the Courtauld Gallery in London is set to reopen its doors in November. Rooms throughout its home in the north wing of Somerset House, William Chambers’ 18th-century masterpiece on the Strand, have been restored or expanded; most significantly, the Great Room on the second floor has been opened up, with partitions knocked through to provide an enlarged space for Samuel Courtauld’s celebrated collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings. As well as the redisplay of the permanent collection, the institution will reopen with three temporary exhibitions, including a show of modern drawings from the recent bequest of Howard Karshan (until January 2022).
