Seventh-century window ledge found at Tintagel Castle in Cornwall | A seventh-century slate window ledge has been found at Tintagel Castle in north Cornwall, the Guardian reports. The ledge is 60cm long and inscribed with symbols, names and a mix of Latin, Greek and Celtic words. It is thought to be the work of a practising scribe who appears familiar with both the informal style of writing and the formal script found in illuminated gospels of the period. The discovery is evidence that the coastal site may have once been home to a multicultural, literate port community ‘with strong connections from Atlantic Europe to the Mediterranean’, according to Win Scutt, a curator at English Heritage.
