Executive Director, Townhouse Gallery, Cairo
William Wells set up the Townhouse Gallery, Cairo, in 1998 to promote contemporary art in Egypt. The first independent art space in the country, under his direction it has hosted regular exhibitions of work by young artists alongside that of bigger names, created a work space, art library and workshops for adults and children, and established a residency programme for artists, writers, curators and film-makers. Wells served as an educational advisor to the UK’s Arts Council and Crafts Council in the 1980s, and more recently on the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Advisory Committee; he is advisor to the Fulbright scholarship in Egypt, and sits on the board of the Foundation for Arts Initiatives.
