Alice Neel: People Come First

19 March 2021

While some museums are closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibitions will include shows at institutions that are currently open as well as digital projects providing virtual access to art and culture.

Whether depicting friends and family, political agitators or those left dispossessed by the Great Depression, Alice Neel aimed to highlight ‘the dignity and eternal importance of the human being’. This display of 100 paintings and drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (22 March–1 August) reflects that commitment, ranging from intimate depictions of motherhood to candid portraits of Neel’s neighbours in Spanish Harlem – as well as art-world luminaries such as Andy Warhol and Linda Nochlin.
