André Devambez: Vertigo of Imagination

The Petit Palais (9 September–31 December) explores the life and works of the once-renowned, but now little-known Parisian painter and illustrator of the Belle Époque. Over the course of his career, Devambez produced commissioned works for a range of publications, including the literary newspaper Le Figaro illustré, and illustrated novels such as Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and Émile Zola’s The Fête, while also making his own studies of modern inventions. Highlights of the exhibition include the series Les Avions Fastasistes (1911–14), which was the result of artist’s visits to local airfields, and the dizzying painting La Charge, Boulevard Montmarte (1901), which captures a bird’s-eye view of the Paris crowd.
