Art dealer Subhash Kapoor charged with running extensive smuggling ring | The Manhattan district attorney has charged art dealer Subhash Kapoor with orchestrating a 30-year scheme of trafficking in looted antiquities from countries across South and Southeast Asia, worth some $145 million. Kapoor is currently incarcerated in India, where he has since 2012 awaited trial on similar charges. The new criminal complaint claims that 39 items, worth $36 million, are still missing. Seven other defendants are named in the criminal complaint.
David Zwirner to open Paris space, citing Brexit concerns | New York-based gallery David Zwirner will open a location in Paris this October, the Financial Times reports (£). ‘Brexit changes the game,’ Zwirner said. ‘After October, my London gallery will be a British gallery, not a European one.’ The Paris space will be Zwirner’s sixth; there are currently galleries in London and Hong Kong, and three locations in New York.
Himali Singh Soin wins 2019 Frieze Artist Award | London- and Delhi-based artist Himali Singh Soin has won the 2019 Frieze Artist Award and will produce a new commissioned work for Frieze London this October. Her proposal involves British anxieties about immigration during the Victorian age.
New York court rules that Nazi-looted Schiele works will remain with victim’s heirs | An appellate court in New York upheld an earlier decision that returned two Egon Schiele drawings – Woman in a Black Pinafore and Woman Hiding her Face – to the heirs of Fritz Grünbaum, a Viennese cabaret singer whose art collection was seized by Nazis before he was killed in a concentration camp in 1941. The Schiele works had previously been bought by London dealer Richard Nagy, who has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the case.
Eberhard Havekost (1967–2019) | German painter Eberhard Havekost has died at the age of 51. Havekost, who served as a painting professor at Düsseldorf Art Academy, is known for his eerie canvases based on photographs and digital images, that fuse traditions of abstraction and figuration. His work is in the collections of institutions including MoMA, MOCA Los Angeles, and the Tate.
