While museums around the world are shuttered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibition openings will be replaced by a selection of digital initiatives providing virtual access to art and culture.
Since 2001, the Whitney Museum has been commissioning and exhibiting net art and new media art through Artport. You can browse commissions from the past two decades on the Artport page on the Whitney’s website, and learn about how some works have been restored to make their software compatible with current web browsers (see Casey Reas’ Sol LeWitt-inspired piece {Software} Structures, which was launched in 2004 and restored in 2016). The latest addition is Sam Lavigne and Tega Brain’s New York Apartment (2020), a website advertising a fictitious apartment spanning all five boroughs of the city and costing $43,869,676,331. And for those feeling nostalgic about the internet of yore, the old stand-alone Artport site is still accessible, featuring an even wider selection of artists making work online pre-2006. Visit Artport here.
