While museums around the world are shuttered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibition openings will be replaced by a selection of digital initiatives providing virtual access to art and culture.
In 1942 Evelyn Lambart became the first woman to join Norman McLaren’s animation studio, founded the previous year, at the National Film Board of Canada. A series of nine films created by Lambart between 1949 and 1980 – either alone or with McLaren – were set to be screened at this year’s Images Festival in Toronto. Now the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto is instead hosting the screening on its new online platform Shift Key (from 27 April–11 May). The films range from abstract experiments such as the bewitching Begone Dull Care (1949), a collaboration with McLaren accompanied by jazz music from the Oscar Peterson Trio, to cut-out animations that bring to life Aesop’s fables. Visit Shift Key to watch the nine Lambart animations and explore the rest of MOCA’s moving-image offering, which is on a regular rotation.
