While museums around the world are shuttered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibition openings will be replaced by a selection of digital initiatives providing virtual access to art and culture.
The end of cherry-blossom season is approaching, but some cherries are still blooming at Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York. While the garden is closed, you can track their progress on ‘CherryWatch’, a daily-updated map. There is also plenty of information about the individual species and cultivated varieties in BBG’s Flowering Cherry Collection, alongside a delightful time-lapse video charting the progress of the cherries over a single season in 2008, and a video compilation of past performances from Sakura Matsuri, the garden’s annual cherry-blossom festival. Finally, for those craving a more immersive experience, you can sample the Google Street View tours of the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden and Cherry Esplanade and Cherry Walk, captured during cherry-blossom season in 2013. Visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden website to start exploring.
