Artists inspired by the internet are ubiquitous these days, but the self-taught Cory Arcangel stands out as a singular talent. Drawing on video games and pop-cultural references, and making use of a range of digital media, he makes it clear that much of his work is ‘entirely supposed to be checked out over a computer’. If such a stance challenges notions of artistic authenticity, it hasn’t stopped Arcangel being heralded by many major museums – including, in 2011, an exhibition at the Whitney Museum that saw an entire floor of the Breuer Building given over to his art.
