Albrecht Dürer set off for the last major journey of his life in 1520, travelling to the Netherlands via Aachen, the German border town where this display is going on view, at the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum (18 July–24 October). The exhibition retraces his footsteps through some 180 works – around half by Dürer himself, and the rest from contemporaries and followers such as Quinten Massys, Lucas van Leyden and Bernard van Orley, many of whom he met on his travels. A highlight of the display – a version of which will travel to the National Gallery in London later this year – is a copy of Dürer’s travel diary made in around 1570.
