The scholar and critic Erika Balsom is interested in cinema, art and how they intersect – seen clearly in publications such as After Uniqueness: A History of Film and Video Art in Circulation. A senior lecturer in film studies at King’s College London, with a PhD in modern culture and media from Brown University, she has published widely; her latest project, An Oceanic Feeling: Cinema and the Sea (2018), is an in-depth look at the effects of submarine cinematography in light of Freud’s notion of oceanic feeling. Balsom’s criticism is regularly published in Artforum, Art Monthly, Art Agenda and Sight and Sound.
