The Museum of Modern Art in New York (11 December–15 April 2023) reveals the collaborative creative process behind the Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of the classic fairy tale for his first stop-motion feature. Coinciding with the film’s global release, the display shines a light on the designers, craftspeople and animation artists who helped to bring the story to life. Exhibits on show include working film sets, drawings, props, sculptural moulds and time-lapse video installations that document the various stages of puppet-making and world building. The exhibition concludes with an installation dedicated to del Toro’s previous works that reveals his ongoing fascination with mythical narratives; it includes newly commissioned videos and posters for films such as Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and The Shape of Water (2021).
