Museums in many countries remain closed, but at least spring has sprung. This week’s Apollo Art Diary picks out four arty gardens to enjoy…
Perhaps not surprisingly, given the organic, nature-inspired forms of her sculptures, Barbara Hepworth was a keen gardener throughout her life. At the Hepworth Wakefield, the gardens this spring have been planted with Thalia narcissus – thought to be the only variety the artist allowed in her garden – as well as lungwort, and a variety of tulip species. From 19 April–2 May the museum is hosting a range of online talks, on the history of gardens, tips for your own, and other subjects, to raise funds to help its cultural gardener Katy Merrington with upkeep. For those who can’t get along to see for themselves, Hepworth Wakefield is also releasing a series of photographs that show the gardens bursting into life. Find out more from the Hepworth Wakefield’s website.
