Hoda Afshar’s arresting images combine aspects of conceptual, staged and documentary photography. With a focus on displaced people, Afshar’s work has won multiple awards, including the Bowness Photography Prize and Sotheby’s Australia People’s Choice Award in 2018. Among her most powerful and best-known images is the portrait she took in 2018 of Kurdish-Iranian refugee Behrouz Boochani, who was held at the Australian detention centre on Manus Island from 2013–17. Afshar’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Monash Gallery of Art and St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne. She teaches at the Victorian College of the Arts and the Photography Studies College (both in Melbourne).
