Lee Bul

Lee Bul came to international prominence in the 1980s for her sculptures and installations, employing a dystopian sci-fi aesthetic to examine how our minds and bodies are shaped by modern technologies. Her work draws on a vast range of influences, taking in everything from myth and folklore to modern architecture, speculative fiction and 20th century cultural history; among Lee’s most famous works are the series of cyborgs she created between 1997–2011. Lee’s art has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including the Hayward Gallery, London (2018), which travelled to Gropius Bau, Berlin (2018-2019), the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and the Fondation Cartier in Paris. In 2019, she received the Ho-Am Prize for the Arts, which is awarded to people of Korean heritage who have contributed to the enrichment of culture and arts for humankind.
