Lu Yang’s work explores how we live in the digital realm: how the internet is transforming our bodies, identities and beliefs. In collaboration with a team of scientists, 3D animators and technicians, the artist has created a non-binary ‘digital post-human’ avatar called Doku, based on Yang’s own body, which has since appeared in a number of the artist’s works: in 2020, in collaboration with Acute Art, Yang created the augmented reality work Gigant DOKU, in which the avatar becomes a giant dancing superhero. Other works by Yang, whose first exhibition (at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art) came only a year after the artist graduated from the China Academy of Art in 2010, incorporate performance, 3D-animated films, video-game installations, holograms, neon, VR and software manipulation. Yang has staged performances and solo exhibitions at the Garage Museum, M Woods and MOCA Cleveland, among other institutions.
