Dutch sculptor Magali Reus reimagines the everyday by building architectural abstractions that allude to practical objects but whose purpose is obscured by their nonsensical structures. In her South London Gallery show ʻAs mist, descriptionʼ earlier this year, Reus drew on the language of industrial mass production with a series of objects that might almost have been found in a factory. This inventiveness has received much recognition: she won the Prix de Rome in 2015 and is shortlisted for this year’s Hepworth Prize for Sculpture. In recent years her work has appeared at Bergen Kunsthall and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and she is currently preparing for a solo exhibition at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, in 2020.
