Toronto hosts the first museum display of the late painter’s melancholy nocturnal scenes
This display at the Art Gallery of Ontario (13 August–18 April 2022) is the first museum show dedicated to the work of Matthew Wong, the self-taught Chinese Canadian artist whose meditative paintings received widespread acclaim before his death in 2019 at the age of 35. The exhibition brings together more than 40 works from Wong’s Blue Series (2017–19); ranging from small-scale gouaches to expansive oils, and drawing on influences from Chinese calligraphy to the Fauves, these nocturnes conjure an interior world that is still and melancholy, but vividly realised.
