Center for Netherlandish Art

This week’s Apollo Art Diary highlights museums and expansions that are scheduled to open later this year.

In November the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston will open its Center for Netherlandish Art, a research facility established with endowment funds donated in 2017 by Boston-based collectors Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo and Susan and Matthew Weatherbie, who have also promised large gifts of Dutch and Flemish paintings from their collections to the institution. To mark the launch, the MFA has renovated seven of its galleries where it will present an overview of art, commerce and science across Flanders and the Netherlands in the 17th century (opening to the public on 20 November). Painting highlights include works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Frans Hals and Van Dyck; there are also extensive displays of decorative arts, ranging from Delftware and silver to an elaborate Dutch doll’s house, kitted out with some 200 pieces of miniature furniture.
