An artist and architect who was born in Syria, raised in Saudi Arabia and educated in the United States, Mohamad Hafez creates intricate dioramas of the streets and rooms of Damascus out of found objects, paint and scrap metal. Through them he reflects on the devastation of the city during the Syrian war, incorporating Qur’anic verses as messages representing his hopes for its regeneration in the future. Hafez’s work was exhibited in 2019 at the Cairo Biennale, the Ford Foundation Gallery, New York and the Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis. One of his sculptures has been acquired by the Brooklyn Museum through the Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah. In 2018, he was a Yale University Silliman College Fellow.
