‘Is it art?’ is a question that British artist Ryan Gander actively courts with his riddling conceptual works. His art spills beyond familiar parameters, sliding between photography, sculpture, installation and super-subtle performances. Some of his gestures have been vanishingly slight, such as an attempt to slip a nonsensical, palindromic word, ‘mitim’, into the English language. Fictional characters such as Sherlock Holmes make frequent appearances in his art – as if trying to decode its enigmas from within. He is currently working on plans for an independent art school in Suffolk.
