Introducing Rakewell, Apollo’s wandering eye on the art world. Look out for regular posts taking a rakish perspective on art and museum stories.
Readers may remember a time when barely a week passed without Shia LaBeouf proposing a new stunt in the name of art. But until recently, it seemed that the erstwhile Disney star’s muse might have fallen prematurely silent.
Thankfully, the Rake’s fears that LaBeouf may have curtailed his art career have proved unfounded. This weekend, he staged his latest happening at Sydney Opera House’s Joan Sutherland Theatre. The idea was for visitors to approach LaBeouf and his co-performers, Säde Rönkkö and Luke Turner, with any message they liked, the only condition being that it began with the words ‘And in the end…’ ‘They can tell a story, deliver a message, whatever’, the self-styled ‘metamodernist’ told the Sydney Morning Herald.
Quite why is anybody’s guess, but the event attracted respectable crowds. According to the Guardian, responses to LaBeouf’s invitation included ‘AND IN THE END, I GUESS I JUST REALLY NEED A HAIR CUT. THAT’S ALL I GOT MAN’ and ‘AND IN THE END, GRETCHEN TOTALLY MADE FETCH A THING’.
