Susan Philipsz

3 September 2018

Susan Philipsz, who was born in Glasgow but now lives in Berlin, is well known for her experimental artworks that explore the relationship between sound and space. These often use her own singing voice and have frequently been installed in surprising locations, such as supermarkets, bus stations and alleyways. Philipsz won the Turner Prize in 2010 – the first year that a sound artist had been nominated – for Lowlands, in which she sang three versions of a 16th-century Scottish ballad. Her work has been exhibited widely, including in solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, and BALTIC, Gateshead.
