UK government export bar on rare Renaissance casket expires | A rare piece of Renaissance furniture known as the Newbattle Abbey casket will not be acquired by a UK museum, after a temporary export bar placed on the object by the UK government expired on 11 July. According to the Art Newspaper, both the V&A and National Museums Scotland declined the opportunity to purchase the object, valued at £750,000; it may now be put up for sale on the international market. Worcester Art Museum receives $10m donation | The Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts has received a donation of $10m from the C. Jean and Myles McDonough Charitable Foundation – the largest single donation in the museum’s history. The foundation, named for former museum trustee Jean McDonough and her late husband Myles, previously gave $4m to endow the museum’s directorship in 2015.
CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain Bordeaux appoints new director | Sandra Paton has been appointed to direct the CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain in Bordeaux. The museum has been without a director since March 2018, when María Inés Rodríguez was controversially dismissed from the role. Currently director of the Musée régional d’art contemporain in Sérignan, Paton will take up the reins at CAPC in September.
