Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940-70

The Whitechapel Gallery in London (until 7 May) looks beyond the white male painters traditionally associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement to foreground some of the key women artists working in the aftermath of the Second World War. Comprising some 150 paintings, the exhibition brings together 81 artists from across globe including the renowned American painters Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler alongside lesser-known artists such as the South Korean painter Wook-Kyung Choi whose untitled painting from the 1960s is shown for the first time in the United Kingdom. Additional highlights include mixed media works by artists such as Marta Minujin who incorporates sand, chalk and carpenter’s glue to create dynamic, textured surfaces.
