The Barbican Centre in London hosts the first major survey of the pioneering feminist artist since her death in 2019 (8 September–8 January 2023). Frequently placing her own body at the centre of her works, the artist often addressed issues ranging from sexual expression and the objectification of women to human suffering and the violence of war. The exhibition explores the evolution of the artist’s career from early paintings such as Pin Wheel (1957) to mixed-media sculptural assemblages such as Colorado House (1962) and performance photography, including images from Schneemann’s first solo performance Eye Body: 36 Transformative Actions for Camera (1963) and Up to and Including Her Limits (1976), which sees the artist hanging naked from a harness over a stage set.
