To mark the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the birth of the artist, the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin (20 July–13 November) brings together key works by the German painter Max Liebermann. Drawing from the Alte Nationalgalerie’s permanent collections, the 22 works on display trace the artist’s development from early naturalistic paintings such as Women Plucking Geese (1871) through to his later Impressionistic style, demonstrated by works such as Self-Portrait with a Sports Cap at the Easel (1925). The displays are interspersed with 13 video commentaries, with speakers ranging from the Nationalgalerie’s director Ralph Gleis to the German actor Tom Schilling, who discuss everything from the unpopularity of Liebermann’s early naturalistic works to the artist’s fondness for horticulture.
