Drawing from the large collection of artworks associated with the movement held in the Ashmolean Museum’s Western Art Print Room, the exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite works (15 July–27 November 2022) opens in place of the planned show titled ‘Russia! Icons & the Avant-Garde’, which has now been withdrawn due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Offering the opportunity to take in the breadth of the Ashmolean’s holdings in this area, the exhibition includes preparatory sketches and personal portraits of members of the movement to highlight the collegial nature of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. Highlights include Sir John Everett Millais and Charles Allston Collins’s small drawings of each other, while large-scale works such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s The Day Dream (1872–78) demonstrate the Pre-Raphaelite fondness for depicting women.
