An Italian journey – as a blockbuster Donatello show arrives in Florence, this week’s Apollo Art Diary highlights exhibitions around the world that trace the story of art in Italy.
In 2013, Giuseppe Penone teamed up with Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory in France to create his first works in the medium – a sequence of 11 disks, ten are patterned with the imprint of one of Penone’s fingers in black, with the eleventh a variation in gold. A continuation of the Propagazioni series begun by the Arte Povera pioneer in 1995, the works invite the viewer to draw comparisons between corporeal forms and those found in nature, whether rings of tree trunks or ripples on a body of water; they go on public display for the first at the Frick Madison alongside works from the Frick’s historical porcelain holdings (17 March–28 August). Find out more from the Frick’s website.
