Viva Venezia! The Invention of Venice in the 19th Century

With Venice under the rule of the Habsburgs in the early 19th century, Austrian artists were drawn to the charms of La Serenissima more than ever before, as this display of some 80 paintings attests. The exhibition, at the Belvedere in Vienna from 17 February–4 September, also makes use of literature and film to show how a new vision of Venice took shape in the Austrian imagination.
