This retrospective of Will Maclean (b. 1941) at City Art Centre in Edinburgh (4 June–2 Oct) examines almost every facet of the Scottish artist’s practice, featuring more than 150 works including drawings, prints, sculptures, artistic collaborations, video productions and outdoor installations. Born in Inverness, Maclean’s works often feature imagery of the Scottish Highlands, reflected in sensitive pencil drawings such as Welcome to South Uist (1981) and the coloured etching The King’s Fish (1991), taken from the artist’s series A Night of Islands, which is inspired by Gaelic poetry. Through works such as these, the show considers the artist’s deep connection to the history, archaeology and literature of the Highland region and his affinity with the sea.
