The Museum of Modern Art presents the German photographer’s first museum survey in the United States (12 September–1 January 2023), featuring more than 350 works spanning three decades. The exhibition includes early works such as Lutz & Alex (1992) and Chemistry Squares (1992), which were originally published in the British magazine i-D as well as recent installations in which the artist plays with methods of presentation: unframed prints are taped to the walls or clipped and hung from pins, and framed photographs appear alongside magazine pages. Additional highlights include an audio-visual installation room based around Tillmans’ debut album, Moon in Earthlight (2021), which layers the artist’s photographic works with his music and film footage of people dancing at raves.
